While not the fastest project, just follow the steps and photos below to make your own felt gnome and a wreath to put it on. The free printable is included, and this little guy is worth the labor of love.
Inexpensive craft felt works great for this project. You will need two 12″ x 12″ sheets to wrap the wreath form, as well as, several small pieces to cut out shapes that make up the gnome. Shades of pink, red and purple are perfect for the Valentine’s Day theme.
The wreath form is 10″ and made of foam, but metal or straw will work too. You can order several at a time on Amazon, or pick one up at your local dollar store.
Fiber fill to stuff the gnome can be substituted for cut up pieces of felt if you don’t have any on hand.
You will also need these basic craft supplies and paper to print the pattern.
Begin by downloading the free printable template.
Then print the template on your home printer, and cut out the templates with scissors. (Do not use your fabric scissors for cutting paper!)
Cut felt for the background into 1″ strips. A 10″ wreath form requires two 12″ x 12″ sheets of felt cut into 1″ strips for full coverage.
Next, think about which colors you would like your gnome shapes to be. Trace the template shapes onto colored felt accordingly.
Now cut out the shapes with scissors. It is fine to use fabric scissors for felt, or any pair of craft scissors will do. Kids can even practice cutting with their safety scissors for this project.
Let’s start to build the gnome. For the front, you will need a large triangle, small circle, small triangle, and large circle.
Assemble the felt pieces on top of one another as shown below.
Now it is time to start hand stitching, so thread a needle. Hold all the felt pieces in place with your thumb and index finger while stitching around the small circle (the nose).
Next add the small heart to the center of the gnome’s hat, and stitch it down.
The front of your gnome is now complete.
For the back, you will need the other large triangle and large circle.
Assemble the triangle on top of the circle, about 1/3 of the way down.
Then add a few stitches to hold the pieces together.
Now the front and back of your gnome are ready to assemble.
Stack the front onto the back, and begin stitching with a whip stitch around the perimeter of the entire gnome. Leave a 2″ opening.
Next, stuff the gnome with a filling of your choice. Fiber fill, felt pieces or even scrap fabric pieces will work. You only need a small amount.
When the gnome is as plump as you’d like, continue stitching around the perimeter until close.
Now it is time to adhere the felt to the wreath form.
Begin by taking a strip and adhering it to the wreath form with a hot glue gun.
Then wrap the felt strip around the form, overlapping slightly. Secure the other end with hot glue.
Take another strip of felt and continue wrapping it where the other left off. Alternate colors if you are using more than one.
Secure each felt strip with hot glue at the beginning and end.
Continue wrapping and gluing the felt strips until your entire wreath form is covered.
Then use hot glue to adhere your gnome and heart cut-outs to the wreath.
You made a Valentine’s Day gnome wreath!
Hang it with pride on your door using a wreath hanger. Command hooks work great too. Add a length of ribbon in a coordinating color to making hanging easier and add an extra pop of holiday color.
