How to Make a Felt Pencil Holder
Begin by cutting your felt to size. You will need four squares of the same size per pencil holder, two for the lining and two for the exterior. The examples shown use 9″ x 9″ and 7″ x 7″ squares.
For the larger pencil holder, cut 2″ squares from each of the bottom corners. If you are making the smaller pencil holder, cut 1.5″ from the bottom corners.
Next, clip the two lining pieces together with sewing clips. Repeat for the exterior pieces.
Mark 2″ along one side of the lining pieces to leave open for turning.
Then sew along the sides and bottom of each set of felt pieces with a 1/2″ seam allowance. Remember not to sew the turning gap, across the top or along the square cut-outs!
Now create box corners for both the lining and exterior. This is done by pinching the opening at each bottom corner and lining up the seams. Clip to hold.
Sew each box corner with a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Turn the lining right side out, but leave the exterior the way it is (inside out).
Place the exterior inside the lining so that right sides are together. Line up the seams, and clip around the top edge.
Sew around the top opening.
Next, gently pull the exterior felt (which is currently on the interior) through the gap you left in the lining.
At this point, your pencil holder should look like the photo below (and look nothing like a pencil holder!).
Sew the turning gap closed with a 1/8″ top stitch.
Push the lining into the exterior to form a basket shape. Then turn the top down 1″ to reveal the lining.
